Top Reasons to Look for a New Job

Posted

Are you unhappy in your current position but too worried about the job market to jump ship? Are you stuck in a rut, but afraid to try something new? How do you know when to dust off (and revamp!) your resume and make a move? There are a few tell-tale signs that help you to know that it’s time.

Stress is Affecting Your Health.
Every job has its stressors, but when your physical or mental health begins to suffer, it may be time to move on. Symptoms such as depression, insomnia or grinding or clenching your teeth in your sleep may be signs that your job is having a negative impact on your health. Even frequent colds may indicate that your immune system is taking a hit.

Nowhere to Go.
Do you want your boss’s job? No? Are there lateral moves you can make, or a clear promotion path? Unless you have already landed in the job of your dreams, you may want to move on to more challenging pastures. It’s great to have your current job down cold, but careers, like sharks, need to keep moving in order to thrive.

Boredom.
If you can do your job in your sleep, every day is going to drag. You’ll start to dread coming in. Maybe you’ve stuck around because of perks like a short commute, or a boss who lets you leave early to pick up your kids, but sooner or later you’re going to stagnate. Or in a worst case scenario, you lose your job and your skills are out of date, making it harder to find a new job when don’t have a choice.

Company Instability.
If your boss’s moods are a roller coaster ride or you watch the local news before you leave for work in the morning to be sure your company is still in business, it’s time to start looking at your options. That sort of stress takes its toll and you’re better off looking for a job by choice and while you’re still employed.

You’re in the Wrong Career.
Maybe you got off track after college, or your career path is not what you expected. There is nothing wrong with taking an entirely different tack as long as your do your homework and carefully plan your exit. Whether you want to return to school or dream of being an entrepreneur, laying the proper groundwork will be crucial for your success.
